Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects both men and boys. It causes the breasts to swell and enlarge abnormally. Males and females both have breast glands, but males' are less visible. The breast is made up of firm and dense glandular tissue as well as softer fatty tissue. Individuals have different ratios of glandular to fatty tissue in their breasts. A man who has gynecomastia may have an excess of both types of tissue. Liposuction can be used to remove excess fatty tissue. A small tube is inserted through an incision. Excision is the process of removing excess glandular tissue by cutting out tissue with a scalpel. This usually results in a scar around the nipple's edge. If a significant amount of tissue and skin must be removed, the incision and scar will be larger.
